Late last year, U.S. Customs & Border Protection stood up a data science division to improve its ability to monitor the border. The initiative is geared toward accurately determining the traffic that flows through the U.S. border with Mexico. Termed, the “denominator problem” the data division will use analytics and simulation modeling to understand the number of border crossings and develop metrics for success. Situational awareness and risk assessments are other key challenges to border security that are also on the agenda.
