Late last year, U.S. Customs & Border Protection stood up a data science division to improve its ability to monitor the border. The initiative is geared toward accurately determining the traffic that flows through the U.S. border with Mexico. Termed, the “denominator problem” the data division will use analytics and simulation modeling to understand the number of border crossings and develop metrics for success. Situational awareness and risk assessments are other key challenges to border security that are also on the agenda. Join us to hear more about the division’s mission, advancements in analytics, the promise of AI’s potential in analytics, and the type of intelligence needed to make for data driven resource allocation and decision making.

Tasked with defending and preserving the United States the USCG Is responsible for the personal safety and security our citizens; the marine transportation system and infrastructure; natural and economic resources; and the territorial integrity of our nation–from both internal and external threats, natural and man-made. USCG jurisdiction includes the U.S. ports and inland waterways, along the coasts, and international waters.  The Coast Guard is a unique military, multi-mission, maritime force offering a unique blend of military, law enforcement, humanitarian, regulatory, and diplomatic capabilities. These capabilities underpin three broad roles: maritime safety, maritime security, and maritime stewardship. There are 11 missions that are interwoven within these roles.
